Ašvaganda: tvůj adaptogen pro dny, kdy je toho příliš

Myšlenky se točí, tělo je napjaté a energie kolísá nahoru a dolů jako jojo. Pokud ti to zní povědomě, nejsi sama a pravděpodobně jsi už slyšela o ašvagandě. Co ti ta starodávná kořenina vlastně dělá a jak ji použít, aby působila?

WHAT IS ASHWAGANDHA?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a medicinal plant that Ayurveda has treasured for thousands of years. It also goes by “Indian ginseng” and “winter cherry”, and the part used is the root, which you will find at Junai as pure ground powder.

It is a canonical member of the adaptogen family, a group of plants that traditionally help the body adjust to stress and stay in balance. That is exactly why ashwagandha has become one of the most popular ingredients in women’s wellness in recent years.

V ájurvédě ji řadí mezi tzv. rasajany, což je skupina rostlin, které mají posilovat životní energii, podporovat dlouhověkost a pomáhat tělu udržovat rovnováhu.

Traditional use and history

Ashwagandha is far from a modern fad. Its story goes back more than 3,000 years, into the roots of Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicinal system. The name ashwagandha comes from Sanskrit, where ashva means “horse” and gandha means “smell”, which was read two ways: the root really does smell a little horsey, but it was said to give whoever took it “the strength and vitality of a stallion”.

Ayurveda places it among the so-called rasayanas, a group of plants said to strengthen vital energy, support longevity and help the body hold its balance. Traditionally it was used to rebuild strength after illness, to settle the mind, and as support through stretches of exhaustion. It is also known as “Indian ginseng”, although botanically it is not related to ginseng at all, and as “winter cherry”, after its small, orange-red fruit.

Here’s the interesting part: in Ayurveda the root was almost always prepared warm, stirred into milk with honey or ghee (clarified butter). This was not only a matter of taste. Fat helps with the absorption of its fat-soluble compounds, and Ayurveda insisted that warm liquids were crucial for settling the body down. That same preparation, root powder in warm milk, is still one of the most popular ways to take it.

Ashwagandha effects: what the science shows

Let’s be clear: ashwagandha is not a medicine and it does not promise miracles. But unlike a lot of trendy ingredients, it has a decent body of serious research behind it.

  • Stress and cortisol. A systematic review of 9 randomised trials, covering 558 participants in total, found a statistically significant reduction in perceived stress, anxiety, and cortisol (the main stress hormone) in people taking ashwagandha compared with a placebo. Worth understanding: adaptogens work gradually, so have patience and know that the effects come with time.

  • Calm through the day. Ashwagandha shines brightest as daytime support, helping you stay calmer and more collected when the day presses in. Research does also point to easier winding down and better sleep quality, but if sleep is your main concern, reishi is the more targeted choice. So read ashwagandha as an ally for a calmer, more balanced day, with effects that show up gradually, after a few weeks of regular use.

  • Mood and focus. More recent studies are looking into mood, mental clarity and concentration, and the first results are promising.

  • Why for women in particular? Research on adaptogens has rarely focused specifically on women. That is changing: newer data (2026) point to support for stress and mood, especially in women in their 40s and 50s, when hormonal swings are more pronounced.

Which compounds in ashwagandha actually calm you

Ashwagandha does not contain just one hero substance but a complex of more than 40 active compounds. These are the ones that earn it its calming reputation:

  • Withanolides.
This is the main and best-researched group, steroidal lactones, and the two named most often are withaferin A and withanolide D. Withanolides are considered to carry most of the plant’s adaptogenic and calming properties.

  • Sitoindosides and flavonoids
Sitoindosides, sugar-bound forms of withanolides, contribute to the adaptogenic and antioxidant properties, while flavonoids add their own strong antioxidant action.

How they calm you (the mechanism)
Research, mostly animal and laboratory work, suggests that withanolides act on the GABA system, the main inhibitory or calming neurotransmitter in the brain, the one that quiets excess nervous excitation. Withanolides are thought to bind to GABA receptors and strengthen their calming action (a GABA-mimetic effect), and some studies have shown a particularly strong effect on the GABAρ receptor subtype. Put simply: ashwagandha appears to help the body press the brake on excess nervous activity.

Effect on the stress axis (the HPA axis). Research also suggests that ashwagandha acts on the HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal), the system that regulates the release of cortisol, the main stress hormone. Settling that axis is likely the reason studies show a drop in cortisol levels.

How and when to take ashwagandha

Consistency and the right dose are what matter.

  • Dose: as pure root powder, ashwagandha is usually taken at 1 to 2 teaspoons (roughly 2 to 4 g) a day. If this is your first time, start with 1 teaspoon, listen to your body, and increase gradually if you need to.

  • When: most often in the morning, if you want calm energy and more resilience to stress through the day. You can split it into two smaller doses, morning and afternoon, if that suits you better. For targeted sleep support, reach for reishi instead.

  • What with: root powder has a distinct, earthy taste, so it dissolves most easily in warm water or (plant) milk, traditionally with a spoonful of honey. Take it with a meal, so it absorbs better and sits more easily on your stomach.

  • Patience: ashwagandha is not a “right now” ingredient. Most people notice a difference after roughly 6 to 8 weeks of regular, daily use.

A few more things worth knowing

  • The name “winter cherry” comes from the small red fruit the plant produces, similar to physalis, to which it is botanically related, both belonging to the nightshade family.

  • Although the root gets most of the attention today, tradition also used the leaves, and modern research shows that different parts of the plant carry a somewhat different withanolide profile.

  • Ashwagandha is a genuine “survival artist”, thriving in the dry, stony soils of India, the Middle East and parts of Africa, where plenty of other plants give up. Some read a symbolic parallel into that resilience: a plant that withstands stress is said to help a person do the same.

  • Among adaptogens, ashwagandha is one of the few that research links to calm and more energy at the same time. This is not a stimulant in the caffeine sense, it is a balancing act. That double action is what makes it interesting for packed days.

Ashwagandha is not a magic pill and it will not quiet a brutal week overnight. It is, though, one of the best-researched adaptogens, and with regular use it traditionally helps the body meet stress and settle. If you are looking for gentle, long-term support for a calmer, more balanced day, it is worth your attention.
